N3P’s flagship movie project screened in Parliament

Not only are Nihal Nihal Nihal Productions (N3P) the first to depict Mata Sahib Kaur Ji’s exceptional life story on the big screen, but their flagship project also achieved another landmark moment. ‘Supreme Motherhood’ has become the first ever Sikh-based film to be shown in Parliament.

Bringing the glorious story of this trailblazing woman into the corridors of UK power is truly something to celebrate. The Parliament of the United Kingdom is its supreme legislative body and the screening had very high-profile guests in attendance. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity provided a prominent platform to showcase her life story and the importance of women in Sikhism.

The screening took place on Monday 18th July 2022 and was hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on British Sikhs. The event was made possible by Preet Kaur Gill, MP for Birmingham Edgbaston and Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, MP for Slough. Mr. Dhesi was full of high praise and congratulated N3P for the hard work that went into the film project, as well as the event itself. He further stated: “we all know why such initiatives, by those in the creative sector such as the arts, are incredibly important. They help to rattle our conscious, not just as Sikhs, but as non-Sikhs. They help us draw closer to our history…we would be lost if we did not remember what happened in our Sikh history”. He also urged Sikhs to be proud of their rich history, recognising how Mata Sahib Kaur Ji was fighting for Women’s Rights when it wasn’t in vogue. The MP for Slough also recognised the responsibility of creative industries to bring history to a generation increasingly turning away from books. It is clear from his comments that Mr. Dhesi’s values marry with N3P who ARE the future of educating Sikhs through the media.

As well as the aforementioned dignitaries, over 100 VIP guests attended the special screening, among them Kamel Hothi OBE, the Non Executive Director of TLC Lions and Rupinder Kaur of Asian Women Mean Business. Special mention also to BBC Asian Network’s Nikita Kanda, BBC Broadcaster Amrit Kaur, Commonwealth Powerlifting Champion Karenjeet Kaur Bains and Film Director Sumeet Singh Sarao. PTC News were also on hand to cover the event.

Kamel Hothi OBE summed up the mood perfectly: “I’m so, so proud that we are showing this film in Britain’s most powerful organisation in Westminster. I’m humbled to be here today”.

Furthermore, Karenjeet Kaur Bains, the Commonwealth Powerlifting Champion was excited about “a film about female empowerment” and was “very happy that our name has reached Parliament”. She further remarked, “Kaurs should be at the forefront; we are warriors and are strong, and this is in us all. I am inspired by these examples [in this film]”.

A huge well done to all of those involved in organising this historic event, not least of all the volunteers who worked tirelessly to make sure that everything was smooth sailing. As you know, N3P have been passionate about raising the profile of Mata Sahib Kaur Ji. This exemplary female figure from Sikh history led a nation, defying the prohibitive gender conventions of the time, while keeping humanity, selflessness and compassion at the centre of her service. It seems fitting that this leader’s story was shared in Parliament, where countless leaders have graced its offices and corridors. Long may her story be given the prominence it deserves.
